The Canary Island Date Palm or Phoenix canariensis  is a grand iconic palm of our seaside boulevards, historic homes and Victorian-era public plantings. It has a large crown of dark green fronds, becoming very spiny near the thick trunk. Phoenix canariensis is a slow growing but extremely tough palm which handles heat and drought, cold and frost. These palms prefer well drained soil, in a sunny or part shade position.
